TG4 will screen the Irish language film Tarrac this Monday (18th) at 9.30pm
Next Monday night , the TV premiere of Tarrac on the free-to-air Irish language channel TG4 and its streaming service TG4 Player has all the ingredients you need for a cosy night in: family drama, a sporting battle against the odds, and some jaw-droppingly beautiful scenery.
While she is reintegrating into the community, she finds herself roped into a team of rowers who are ready to take on the competition at the annual regatta in a naomhóg - a traditional, sea-going canoe - off the coast of Dingle. Will they triumph? You can probably guess - but the film is really about the stories told along the way.
Lovely to look at, indeed - particularly given the stunning setting in a drop-dead gorgeous part of County Kerry, where the craggy coastline and choppy sea is overlooked by dramatic peaks and valleys. But for Kate and her fellow rowers, making the film could be a gruelling experience. “There's something about the sea. When you're going with the sea and the tide, and if the currents or the waves are doing one thing, you have to change your stroke and everything to go with that. Oh, it's gorgeous - a lovely sport.”
"You still see the currach races, the same as the regattas, every year. I mean, it's an absolutely beautiful sport, men and women alike. I was back there a year-and-a-half ago in Roundstone, and they had the races going on. They're rowing against each other, but they're all actually pals. It's a very kind of homely, community-type sport.
The significance of being able to express herself creatively in her native language, and to be recognised globally for it, is not lost on her. “Irish is so important to me, and it's becoming more and more important every day,” she said.
