Adam Sandler reveals that he offered the role of the villain in Billy Madison to Philip Seymour Hoffman, but Hoffman didn't want it. Written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy and directed by Tamra Davis, Billy Madison came out in 1995 to mixed critical reviews but relative box office success. Today, it remains one of Sandler's best-known films, even offering part of its title to his production company Happy Madison. There have even been talks to make a Billy Madison sequel.

And we were like, 'He doesn't wanna do it? What do you mean, he auditioned!' So, I go, 'Let me f*ckin' talk to him, this guy, and tell him how great he is' ... I called him up and said, 'Hey, it's Adam,' and he's like, [imitates Hoffman] 'Oh hey Adam.
The character of Eric Gordon would have been vastly different had Hoffman accepted the role. Instead of the breathy villain laugh and sarcastic tone Whitford brought to the part, Hoffman probably would have done something completely new to make the character his own. Based on his other roles, the Billy Madison villain likely would have felt a bit more menacing with Hoffman's stature and slow speech behind him.
