A new Texas bill will now require training for peace officer dealing with senior adults with dementia who sometimes can become violent.Senior adults with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia can sometimes become violent, confused or irrational.
Although the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement already includes some training on dementia, supporters of the bill, authored by state Rep. Rhetta Andrews Bowers, D-Rowlett, argued that making it a requirement will ensure that the content is not removed in the future. There are approximately 400,000 adults living with Alzheimer’s disease in Texas, according to the State Department of Health and Human Services, and this population is growing as more of us live longer. This will make police encounters more likely in the years to come.
