KC Joyner looks at the 2022 good blocking rates for each NFL team, and what it means for their running backs in fantasy football 2023.
Running backs may not be quite as valuable in fantasy football as they used to be, but it’s still very difficult to win a championship without strong production at the position.
Good blocking is paramount to getting this strong production, as tape studies I have done over the years indicate that rush plays with good blocking — roughly defined as the offense not letting the defense do anything to disrupt a rush attempt— are six times as valuable on a fantasy points per play basis than rush attempts with bad blocking. This was the case in the 2022 season as well, as good blocking rush plays averaged 1.2 fantasy points per play versus 0.2 points for bad blocking plays.
Here is a quick glossary of the good blocking metric terms that are mentioned throughout this review:— the percentage of rush attempts on which a player or team received good blocking.— the average yards gained by a player or team on rush plays with good blocking.— a single number measurement of how productive a team or player was on good blocking rushing plays. This number is calculated by multiplying GBR and GBYPA.
To rank as a league qualifier in these categories, a running back must have generated 100 or more rushing attempts last season . The ADP rankings are per the aggregate ADP ranks at FantasyPros. Any round recommendations are for 12-team league formats.
