Gov. Katie Hobbs’ transportation plan helps relieve strained border communities, humanitarian groups and local leaders say.
Gov. Katie Hobbs holds a news conference on Jan. 20, 2023, on the state of executions in Arizona, border issues and budget discussions.A chorus of bustling conversations spilled from a cluster of white tents as three charter buses waited nearby outside of the Regional Center for Border Health in Somerton on Wednesday morning.
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs decided last week to continue and expand the program of transporting migrants from border-area communities to the interior of the United States. Hobbs The program is run in coordination with the center and is overseen by the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs.
Hobbs and her administration emphasized that the program is different from the practice initiated by her Republican predecessor, former Gov. Doug Ducey, and touted the initiative as a more humanitarian approach . The majority of migrants or their sponsors pay for their travel accommodations from Phoenix. The center stays in close and detailed communication with airport officials as the bus travels from Somerton to Phoenix.
The state allocated $15 million to transport migrants in its budget this year with the busing initiative under Ducey estimated to cost roughly $1 million per month. Every migrant who boards the D.C. buses has a final destination nearby on the East Coast, such as New York, Boston or New Jersey, according to Alejandro Bejarano, the communications director for the Regional Center for Border Health. The purpose of the trip is to reunite people with little resources with their loved ones on the East Coast, Bejarano said.
The center does far more than provide transportation for migrants. The nonprofit provides medical assistance, behavioral health services, COVID-19 screenings and vaccinations to migrants and the surrounding community. The recommendations included robust communication between border-area governments and destination city officials as well as ensuring final destination cities are equipped with welcoming infrastructure for asylum seekers.
