At Charlotte Douglas International Airport, American Airlines is adding airport gates, boosting the number of daily departures— it added 4 gates last week and its average daily departure total will reach 700 on Dec. 18
In terms of daily departures, American’s Charlotte hub is already the third largest single airline hub in the world, after Delta’s Atlanta hub with about 1,000 daily departures and American’s Dallas hub with about 900.
The carrier’s Charlotte growth comes as the airport is ramping up a $3 billion improvement project, which last week added a new restaurant court and next month will begin the four-year construction of a new $600 million main terminal, replacing a structure that has been in place since 1982. The project includes concourse improvements, some already completed, and a planned $422 million fourth parallel runway.
“These new gates enable us to do a couple of things,” Raja said. “We can bring more flights into Charlotte, where we are constrained in a lot of way – in gates [and] taxiways. This is a start for us to continue to grow Charlotte departures over time. Charlotte, primarily served by Airbus aircraft due to its US Airways legacy, will see more Boeing 737s, Raja said. It will gain more seats to Florida and New York. Moreover, having more gates “will give us more flexibility to create more resilience [from weather events} and to make Charlotte more consistently year-round reliable.
One international route American is targeting is Charlotte-Madrid, which currently has seasonal summer service but can go to year-round with the 321XLR.
