The Rangers didn’t spend a single guaranteed dollar on a free-agent reliever this winter. They let one key free agent,, walk. They haven’t invested in a closer, the heart of a bullpen, since spending on Joe Nathan more than a decade ago. The gates to the closer’s role seem to churn as fast as the turnstiles at Globe Life Field.
“He’s got great stuff and he’s got a good way about him, when it comes to makeup,” Bochy said. “He’s got the weapons to finish a game, I know that.”Joe Barlow led the team in saves last year with 13 but was limited to five appearances after the All-Star break by a tendon issue in his wrist that created problems for him when gripping the ball. That led to blisters that troubled him all season. It ultimately required a minor surgical fix after the season.
There are other alternatives, too, though to call them attractive options would be a stretch. Josh Sborz throws hard, has a sometimes-devastating breaking ball, but can leave his fastball flat. Ian Kennedy was once a top-tier closer but is 38 and has an uphill fight simply to make the roster. Yerry Rodríguez throws as hard as Hernández but has exactly one game of MLB experience.
He said a conversation he wandered into with bullpen coach Brett Hayes helped him move forward. Wasn’t anything special. Hayes had been talking to fellow struggling reliever Dennis Santana when Leclerc walked into the talk. Hayes spun and offered the same advice. Sometimes it’s not the message that is so different, but the voice.
