Creator of a detective named Fleming Stone, this early-20th-century writer was a prolific pulp novelist — and now the subject of a biography, “The Vanishing of Carolyn Wells.”
Anyone who spends much time prowling through used bookstores — one of life’s great pleasures, I might add — will regularly come across early-20th-century hardbacks written or edited by Carolyn Wells. The most common of these is “A Nonsense Anthology” , which was reprinted as a Dover paperback in the 1950s.
In general, though, Wells is now mainly remembered as an early writer of, and authority on, detective fiction. Her most famous sleuth, Fleming Stone, alone appears in more than 60 novels. But are any of them still worth reading? Here Barry leaves the reader wanting.
While “The Vanishing of Carolyn Wells” is certainly a useful corrective to our often male-dominated literary and cultural histories, it is simultaneously a highly personal work. Composed in the manner of A.J.A. Symons’s classic “The Quest for Corvo,” Barry makes the book very much an account of herself and how she went about these “investigations into a forgotten mystery author.
