Baylan Skoll is Star Wars' next great villain
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Star Wars' new Ahsoka show features one of the best villain debuts in the last 24 years. Starring Ahsoka Tano , the titular former Jedi is searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn, a former Imperial leader who went missing before the Empire's fall. However, Thrawn has a collection of agents working toward his return as the new Heir to the Empire.
As seen in Ahsoka episodes 1 and 2, Baylan Skoll and his apprentice Shin Hati debut as Dark Jedi in service to Thrawn's ally Morgan Elsbeth. Introduced in the premiere's opening scene breaking out Elsbeth from her imprisonment by the New Republic, Baylan is an incredibly engaging antagonist right from the very beginning alongside his apprentice. Neither Sith nor fully Jedi, very few villains in Star Wars have had as dynamic a debut since Darth Maul's first appearance 24 years ago.
Baylan & Shin Are Entirely New - But Riff On Classic Star Wars Villains Using the dark side of the Force while also wielding unique red-orange bladed lightsabers, Dark Jedi such as Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati have never appeared on screen before. To that end, they're also quite unique to the Star Wars canon with Baylan Skoll confirmed to have been a genuine Jedi Knight before the fall of the Jedi Order with Order 66 and the rise of Palpatine's Empire.
Nevertheless, both Baylan and Shin are immediately depicted as villains, as both are very reminiscent of previously seen Sith Lords. While Shin evokes aggression and the flourish of Darth Maul's fighting style, Baylan in particular resembles Darth Vader in Ahoka's first two episodes, even receiving his own hallway scene where he slaughters New Republic forces, just as Vader did in Rogue One.
