A theory centered on Grand Admiral Thrawn from the upcoming Ahsoka series predicts that the Chiss Admiral is actually Star Wars' next hero rather than the franchise's main antagonist. Since Thrawn was established in Star Wars Rebels, he has been positioned as a villain committed to the longevity of the Galactic Empire. At the end of Star Wars Rebels season 4, Thrawn disappeared into hyperspace alongside Ezra Bridger, a plot point that resurfaced in The Mandalorian season 2.

It could be revealed that Thrawn and Ezra caught wind of an incoming invasion from outside the galaxy, exactly as Thrawn feared. This could then have spurred Thrawn into action once again, with his resurgence simply a renewed focus to take control of the Empire and ally the Imperial remnants with the New Republic to face whatever threat is coming for the galaxy.
