AI and ChatGPT are opportunities to rethink and redefine writing and learning | Opinion
about the end of education, thanks to a new artificial intelligence tool called ChatGPT.generates output text based on user input. As such, it can achieve a wide range of impressive writing feats, such as drafting lengthy essays and composing poetry from only a sentence or two of input.
AI text generators are primed to revolutionize many aspects of higher education. Instead of hand-wringing, however, I believe we’re better off thinking about how learning, and writing, might simply look different in the age of AI. Because we tend to view writing as the basic unit of academic achievement, a computer program that can generate text instantaneously is a serious challenge to all that we do.
Or maybe assignment genres will morph and new types of assessments will emerge. The essay has dominated as the basic unit of learning in higher education for decades, but that. Evidence of academic achievement can take a variety of forms, each of which demonstrates learning in unique ways. Like all quantum leaps in technology, generative AI has the curious effect of making the old seem new, and perhaps an unintended consequence will be those old pedagogical methods will become new again.
