An Air Force training aircraft made an emergency belly landing Wednesday at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph. No injuries were reported. Two photos of the plane posted on the Facebook page Air Force amn/nco/snco showed the plane on its belly on a stretch of runway at the base on San Antonio's Northeast Side. An Air Force statement said the pilot made the emergency landing at 11:30 a.m. 'An aircraft damage assessment and investigation are pending.
An investigation concluded that the aircraft suffered a catastrophic loss of fuel because of a technical error. Mechanics had incorrectly installed a fuel transfer locking plate while overhauling the plane's engine the previous year, the investigation report said. The fuel surge prompted the instructor pilot, Air Force Reserve Lt. Col. Lee Glenn, to bring the plane onto a final approach just 4.8 miles from Randolph.
