Police, fire and ambulance services were called as part of a 'worst case scenario'
An aircraft emergency led to emergency services preparing for a "worst case scenario" at East Midlands Aiport. The incident happened at around midday on Monday, June 10.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire & Rescue Service said: "We received a call at 11:41 and sent appliances from Castle Donnington, Long Eaton, Loughborough, Shepshed, Coalville and Southern. This was an aircraft emergency with a ‘Flap Indicator Error’. Our crews were on site ready for a worst case scenario and fortunately, the aircraft landed safely."
It descended to a height of just 900ft before passing over the airport at around 11.35am. By the time the call was made to the fire service, the plane had climbed to 5000ft and made a 90-degree right turn over Burton on Trent. Chris Lomas, from Flightradar24, said he was not familiar with a flap indicator emergency, but explained: "Flaps are a surface that extends from the rear of the wing. These increase the surface area of the wing , producing more lift and enabling the aircraft to fly at slower speeds. As such, they are extended during approach and landing.
