The Diamonds extended their unbeaten run against Rovers to six matches with the win
Dylan MacDonald was the unlikely hero for Airdrie as they kicked-off the new Championship season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Raith Rovers.
The Diamonds made four changes from last week’s cup win over Queen of the South as Murray Johnson gots the nod in goal ahead of Rangers loanee Kieran Wright. Dylan MacDonald, player-boss Rhys McCabe and Lewis McGrattan came back into the side at the expense of Cammy Bruce, Craig Watson and Chris Mochrie.
Two minutes later, a touchline brawl was sparked when Raith's Shaun Byrne and Aidan Wilson traded shoves after a tackle. Various players rushed over to try and separate the duo before referee Ross Hardie opted to book both men for their efforts. A Frizzell corner from the left was headed onto the roof of the net by Dyaln MacDonald as half-time approached, and then Lewis McGrattan's clipped cross to the edge of the box found Ben Wilson, whose sharp volley flew just over the bar in the best move of the opening 45 minutes.
On the hour mark, a tasty 50/50 tackle between old team-mates Fordyce and Frizzell saw the Airdrie skipper's boot come flying off across the pitch, but it was Fordyce who came off worse and he was unable to continue with an ankle knock.
