Andrew Brown throttled Demi Hannaway on numerous occasions over more than two years, called her derogatory names and sending her 'vile' messages. The mum-of-two passed away at the age of 23.
A grieving family say they've been "destroyed" after their daughter died following horrendous physical and verbal abuse at the hands of her Jekyll and Hyde partner.
The court heard that shortly before she died the couple, who had two young children, argued at their home in the North Lanarkshire town in the early hours of the morning. After Demi's death two children confided that they had witnessed Brown being violent towards her over a prolonged period. Demi's mum discovered abusive messages from Brown on her daughter's phone. Her parents described the outcome of the court case as "bittersweet".
John, who owns a recycling company, described Demi as "the perfect child". The oldest of seven children, she worked for an industrial equipment supplier. She had also done voluntary work at Monklands Hospital and was keen to study pharmacy at university."She could light up a room with her presence. She was a fantastic singer and it's such a loss now that she's gone.Demi met Brown in 2016 and they moved into their own home around a year later after she became pregnant.
"She started at one point to wear polo necks - was that to hide the marks on her neck from Brown strangling her?"She said: "Those messages were vile. It was a real eye opener as to what was going on in their relationship. John added: "He now has domestic abuse on his record so he'll be on a database. He won't get away with this kind of behaviour any more."The court heard that Brown assaulted Demi on one occasion when she had a child in her arms. Apart from compressing her neck on multiple occasions, he pinned her to the floor, spat at her and struck her repeatedly on the head and body.
