The delay came amid a shift in legal strategy by District Attorney Pamela Price’s administration in the case of Lilron Jones.
SAN LEANDRO — The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will have to wait until later this year before potentially arguing for the early release of a man convicted in the 2012 fatal shooting of a 15-year-old girl.
Such a move would fall in line with Price’s efforts at reforming the county’s criminal justice system, which include limiting prison sentences and combatting mass incarceration. Those efforts have run against opposition from several homicide victims’ families, including relatives of Jubrille, who say the new DA has been too lenient on crime.
A jury later convicted Jones, along with two others, of first-degree murder in the killing. The other two defendants, Vijay Bhushan and Marquise Thompson, were sentenced to 34 years to life and 32 years to life, respectively. At Thursday’s hearing, prosecutor Jacq Wilson reiterated his desire for Jones not to undergo a transfer hearing. But — in a distinct change in legal strategy — Wilson also acknowledged in court that the judge’s hands were tied, because the appellate court’s ruling required a transfer hearing to be held.
