Alameda County Sheriff-elect Yesenia Sanchez says she did not expect to win the election outright to unseat the incumbent candidate with 16 years on the job. She makes history to become the first woman and Latina to hold the office.
On Wednesday, Yesenia Sanchez declared victory in the June 7 election.
"It's something that I believe will bring a level of compassion and empathy to how we provide law enforcement services," said Sanchez. "I definitely did not expect to win outright." "There is only so much information you can share with families when you're conducting an investigation but we can provide some information to them as well as the public," said Sanchez, "We need to start treating people as people."
