“What we’re trying to do is provide independence for seniors and people with disabilities.”

The Alameda Loop Shuttle, a program that has received 42 complaints since July 2020, has been discontinued and in its place will be a $673,000 AC Transit three-year, free bus pass pilot program for low-income seniors and people with disabilities.

The Alameda Loop Shuttle, which has been around since 2010, is open to all who can’t or may not be able to use a car to get around, with preferential seating for seniors and people with disabilities. 43% of the recent complaints about the shuttle were that the driver did not stop for riders at a shuttle stop or changed routes and bypassed a stop. Other complaints were about a lack of shuttles running during lunch hours, the behavior of the drivers and transportation management.

“[Shuttle riders] wanted it to run for longer hours and they wanted it to run more days,” Kaldis said. “And when you look at what they’re really asking for, it’s AC Transit, which just makes sense that you can actually help more people [on] more days.” The current shuttle route varies based on the day but each one always stops at Alameda Hospital, Alameda Main Library, Kaiser Permanente, Mastick Senior Center and South Shore Center at Trader Joe’s/Safeway. All these locations will also be accessible through AC Transit routes.
