Alaska Air is preparing for a busy travel season this summer, as well as headwinds including volatile fuel costs and weather challenges
for the first quarter to $142 million, compared with a loss of $143 million a year earlier. Operating revenue rose 31% to $2.2 billion, while operating costs increased 27% due to wages, fuel and higher food and beverage costs. Alaska Air’s load factor, a measure of the number of available seats filled by paying passengers, was 79.9%, up from 76.8% in the prior-year period.
But airfare prices have likely hit their peak, Mr. Tackett said, adding that this is a good thing. “It’s better if airlines are able to add more capacity and sort of keep prices neutral or slightly better value,” he said. “And I think that’s what’s happening.” The cost of challenging weather for the quarter was around $8 million—primarily associated with taking care of passengers experiencing flight disruptions—and roughly $5 million in lost revenue, Mr. Tackett said. Alaska Air is preparing for changing weather patterns that increasingly disrupt flights, the CFO said. That involves investing in such things as technology and additional staffing in an effort to ensure the company can recover quickly from a weather event, he added.
