Next year, the plan will be extended to all Mileage Plus members, but they’ll have to pay about $70 for each tag.
The tags, which don’t have batteries, use e-ink technology to display the routing barcode; the minimal electricity needed for the display is provided by the phone activation.
“This technology allows our guests to tag their own bags in just seconds and makes the entire check-in process almost all off-airport,” Charu Jain, senior vice president of merchandising and innovation at Alaska, said in a statement.. That process — which requires a specific tag holder — also allows the customer to drop off the prepaid bag without waiting in line.
