But the statue of Donahue, surrounded by 151 bronze roses to signify his school record 151 victories in 20 seasons as head coach, is located right outside the tunnel to the Charles E. Young home locker room. Current and future Bruins will pass by that statue, and just maybe they’ll be reminded of the legacy they’re asked to continue.
In all, among the 151 career victories and three 10-win seasons, Donahue’s Bruins won five Pac-10 championships, were 8-4-1 in bowl games and went 10-9-1 against USC, and he was named conference Coach of the Year twice and probably could have been considered a couple more times as well. So Donahue had a giant impact beyond UCLA’s campus. But the true impact of any coach is in the way his players remember him. A lot of them made sure they returned for Friday’s unveiling, and those who spoke remembered the sayings, the idiosyncracies and the life lessons that Donahue passed on to them.
