After a recent operation for colon cancer, my stomach looks like a game of noughts and crosses, marked with a large number of deep purple scars left by my excellent surgeon.

I am writing from the Greek island of Syros on my last week of a long holiday.

Instead, I take my lead from the Med's elderly ladies, who never seem the slightest bit bothered as they pad along the waterline with grandchildren in tow and several tyres of bronzed fat. How nudists left themselves exposedThe house where I'm staying is positioned above a nudist beach. Walking down to the sea involves strolling past sunbathing characters of all ages and sizes, sprawled naked on towels.

Not one to be bossed around by anyone, she turned back to the house and, in a rage, phoned her lawyer, who told her it was indeed illegal to have a dog on the beach if anyone objected. The next day she went back with her dog and the same man confronted her. She sharply informed him that if he wanted to speak to her he must put on a pair of underpants. Didn't he know that it was illegal for anyone to harass a woman exposing themselves in this way? It was the last she heard from him.

During its glory years, the pair had a clear vision, with Bailey rooting his collections in ideas of British culture – from the Bloomsbury Group to David Hockney, David Bowie and Henry Moore.Bailey was followed by Riccardo Tisci, the Italian who layered on a dark gothic identity that sat uncomfortably with the brand. And now, the current designer, Daniel Lee, though a Yorkshireman like Bailey, doesn't seem to know where he is going.

Catherine made it very clear she still has a long way to go, and for those of us who have been through the whole cancer process, this stage is where we are so fortunate to have charities such as Macmillan nurses and Maggie's centres.
