The students of Alief Youngblood Intermediary School returned last week to what seemed to be a different campus.
The surprised youths toured a repainted playground, marveling at renovations that had been done on MLK Day on Jan. 16, Principal Gwen Sandles said.
All this and more was the work of 400 volunteers who participated in the wide-ranging school beautification project organized by the national nonprofit group, which connects military veterans with under-resourced communities and partners regularly with economically disadvantaged Title 1 schools such as Youngblood.
“When the students went out to play, they were in direct sun,” Sandles said. “There was no shade and nowhere to sit.” “We’re a group of veterans that get together and do community service work,” said Plumber, an Army veteran. “Often, once we get out of the military, we lose our focus. That’s why we have ‘The Mission Continues,’ because in the military we always have a mission, and this way we can continue to serve.”
