We chat with ImTotallyFine screenwriter Alisha Ketry about what it's like to see her first major feature film out in the world, how her past work influenced the sci-fi tale, and why she loves the big fight scene:
Jillian Bell and Natalie Morales star in I'm Totally Fine, an exploration of grief with a distinctly out-there perspective. Bell stars as Vanessa, a woman grieving the death of her best friend Jennifer when she decides to take a weekend getaway. When an alien arrives taking the form of Jennifer, though, her weekend getaway turns into an examination of loss and what it means to remember the person you loved and lost too soon.
You've done past work with like shows like Fuller House and American Dad, and you've been doing comedy forever. How would you say that's influenced or even led you to this movie? Alisha Ketry: Brandon and I have been friends for 15 years. We met at a sports bar in Chicago. But he's always been the director route, and I've always been the writer route. And we never really came together until this he was like, "I have a seed of an idea. This is the thing that I think you would be perfect to write for." I was like, "Yeah, okay, let's do it," because I wanted to write a feature anyway and was on hiatus from American Dad.
We were initially going to write it together. Then he was speaking with Kyle Newacheck, and he pitched it to Kyle. Kyle was in, so it became this. The writing process was the three of us on a Zoom call talking about our feelings; talking about the world. And then I would go off and write the treatment, Brandon would give his thoughts, and Kyle gives his thoughts.
There are so many great running bits in the movie. I personally loved the Papa Roach one. I also loved the joke about the uselessness of Teslas. Do you have any favorite joke or scene you were excited to see?
