For all their highly lucrative dazzle, a common knock on Marvel Studios movies is that they don't have much to say about the world as it is today. As the lead villain Erik Killmonger, Jordan practically vibrates with a hard-earned rage, and embodies Coogler's desire to useto confront what it would actually mean in the world today for black people to learn about a country like Wakanda, a technological and economic powerhouse hidden in the heart of Africa.
