Labour says local areas are simply being forced to 'beg for their own money back.'

Mansfield and Clifton are among the Nottinghamshire locations being given £20 million each as the Government attempts to improve areas with "half-empty high streets and run-down shopping centres." A 'Town Board' will be set up in each of the places getting cash, which will see community leaders, employers, councils and the local MP deciding how it is spent.

The Levelling Up Fund in particular has attracted criticism in the past, given the amount of money that councils spend on bidding for money despite many often being unsuccessful. Mansfield's Conservative MP Ben Bradley in particular has previously described the Levelling Up Fund as "inefficient." Following the announcement of the funding on Sunday , all the 55 areas successful in getting investment will have to prepare a long-term plan for their town, with the funding being delivered over 10 years. The Government says priorities should include improving transport and connections, tackling crime and anti-social behaviour and making high streets more attractive through initiatives such as using empty shops for new housing.
