Alleged Sinaloa cartel member extradited to San Diego from Mexico [Breaking]
An alleged member of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel has been extradited from Mexico to San Diego to face drug-trafficking and money-laundering charges stemming from an investigation linked toMexican authorities released this photo of an alleged Sinaloa cartel member identified only as “Alberto,” per the country’s policy of not fully naming criminal defendants until their cases are resolved. He has been fully identified by U.S. authorities as Alberto David Rubio Zamora.
Alberto David Rubio Zamora, alias “El Mudo,” or “The Mute,” is the lead defendant in a three-count, 10-person indictment from 2014 alleging that from at least 2005 to 2014, he was part of a conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine from Mexico into the U.S. and to launder the drug proceeds.. Late last week, Mexican authorities turned him over to U.S. authorities at an airport in Mexico City, according to the Mexican Attorney General’s Office.
Rubio was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charges last week. At a hearing Tuesday morning, he did not dispute his continued detention. His attorney did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday, and court documents available in his case provide few details of his specific alleged actions. According to a document filed by prosecutors, the case against Rubio and his co-defendants — at least seven of whom have already pleaded guilty and been sentenced — arose from an investigation involving Serafin Zambada Ortiz, the San Diego-born son of fugitive Sinaloa kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia.
