We chat with LouNetflix stars allisonbjanney & jurneesmollett about acting in the rain and battling inner demons along with outer villains:
In Netflix's new film Lou, two women escaping two very different pasts are thrown together thanks to an unexpected kidnapping. Premiering on September 23, Bad Robot's thriller doubles as a character study for not only its title character Lou but also her next-door neighbor Hannah. Allison Janney's Lou is an embittered woman living alone with only her secrets to keep her company, while Jurnee Smollett's Hannah is her tenant and a young mother hiding from a dark past.
Allison Janney: We loved it. Once you give in to it, it was so great. You don't have to worry about looking good. Allison Janney: After every take, she'd take off her shoe and pour out buckets of water. It was fun. And I also appreciated that there was a huge heat wave going on in Vancouver, where we shot this, so being wet felt kind of great. There were times when we were freezing, but most of the time during the day, it was like, "Thank God. Turn the water on.
Allison Janney: I've always been very athletic growing up as a kid, and I love doing physical comedy. So, this is one area I've never played in before, which is physical hand-to-hand combat. I loved the process of training with our trainer Daniel Bernhardt, who I worked out with three hours a day to learn moves and learn fighting. I thought it was amazing.
Jurnee Smollett: I did do a lot of research. I spent a lot of time here in Los Angeles at a domestic violence shelter called Jenesse Center. And one thing that I learned is that these women are survivors; they're not victims. I think that's one of the things we really wanted to hone in on for Hannah; that she is struggling to just survive. And it's that primal mother, Mama Bear instinct that comes out.
