CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On the way back from lunch, a teacher hands some of Mrs. Sharon Lenahan’s fourth-graders little bags of candy, a surprise treat. Isabella asks me if I want hers, and I decline, telling her to enjoy it instead.
Most of the time, Isabella is an active and engaged student. But even when dedicating her attention to a lesson, comprehending the material can be a struggle for her – something her Individualized Education Program is helping her work through. Unfortunately, that’s precisely what happens during the lesson immediately following lunch on this particular day. Mrs. Lenahan praises Isabella for giving it her best and reminds the critics that everyone answers questions incorrectly, from time to time.
The students settle into art class today and are instructed to put their finishing touches on the ceramic pieces they’ve been working on for weeks. Given about a half dozen options to choose from, they had the artistic freedom to paint theirs with a design of their choosing.
