Blackburn and Rossendale secure combined £38m in Budget cash boost
East Lancashire has received millions in Levelling Up cash, the government has announced in its Spring Budget. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced £18m was being given to the authority, with a further £20m to Blackburn with Darwen.
In 2022, borough councillors approved a £17.9million bid to the Levelling-Up Fund for Rawtensall and Bacup at the latest full council meeting. The applications outlined ideas for enhanced market halls, public spaces and transport capacity to the Rawtenstall road gyratory system, as detailed in previous reports.
"This new funding will create jobs, drive economic growth, and help to restore local pride. We are delivering on the people’s priorities, levelling up across the UK to ensure that no matter where you are from, you can go as far as your talents will take you." A Treasury spokesperson said: “£20 million is being made available for Blackburn and Darwen Borough Council – funding for the package makes use of unallocated departmental spend from the Department for Levelling Up Housing and Communities . DLUHC has identified projects shortlisted for the Levelling Up Fund as a suitable pipeline of recently assessed good value for the taxpayer projects, that can make a difference to communities quickly.
The news was hailed as ‘fantastic’ by Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Labour leader Cllr Phil Riley. he said: Cllr Riley said: “This is fantastic news for our borough. The council is carving out a really strong reputation for Blackburn with Darwen as a place to invest and do business and this further cements that.
