Amid the battle for Hispanic votes—and Florida—Trump announced a $13 billion aid plan for Puerto Rico
The aid money, awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Administration, will include an $11.6 billion federal share.
$9.6 billion of the federal funds is slotted for to rebuild Puerto Rico’s antiquated energy grid, and $2 billion will go to the U.S. territory’s Department of Education to repair schools and rebuild schools. The White House touted the grants as exceeding “the total Public Assistance funding in any single federally-declared disaster other than Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy,” in a press release., adding “I promised to be [Puerto Rico’s] voice in the US Senate and will continue to do everything I can to support our brothers and sisters on the island.”the administration for “dragging its feet” for so long only to pony up much needed aid 46 days before Election Day.
