Amid ongoing Houston water bill woes, Houston Public Works announces events to ‘help community save money’ - KPRC2 Houston HTX Texas

– Houston Public Works said Tuesday that it is hosting several events in March to highlight ways to save water and save money on your water bill, including events to learn how to fix common water leaks at home.

In its events news release, Houston Public Works pointed to water waste: “more than a trillion gallons of water are wasted every year in homes across the country, and 10% of homes have leaks that waste 90 gallons of water or more per day,” the release read. “Fixing the most common water leaks can save customers about 10% on their water bills.”

While it is important to limit waste and fix leaks, this comes on the heels of a KPRC 2 months-long investigation into the City of Houston’s water bills called “DRAINED.” We have received hundreds of complaints from customers asking for our help with very large bills they don’t think they owe. Back in November, the Director of Public Works Carol Haddock revealed the reason many customers are getting inaccurate bills is that the remote reading devices that are attached to everyone’s meters are old and broken. She said about 40% of them are not sending meter reading back to the department.

Investigator Amy Davis sat down with Public Works director Carol Haddock to ask questions about the meter readings and what else is being done to help people who are having issues with high bills.
