A ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday marked the opening of Harwood Park in downtown Dallas.
, recently changed its name from the Parks for Downtown Dallas to reflect its new mission of maintain the parks. Decherd retired from DallasNews Corporation’s board of directors this month.Decherd, who is chairman of the conservancy, spoke of the many years and the hard work that went into the completion of the four parks.During and after the ceremony, children climbed up and down the mammoth-shaped playground structures, the park’s most conspicuous feature.

Arun Agarwal, the city’s Park and Recreation board president, said 15% of downtown Dallas is now park space, drawing applause from the crowd of about 200.Mayor Eric Johnson said it has been “a monumental undertaking to transform our cityscape and enhance the quality of life for all of our residents.”
