Was it when her husband, a Palestinian, no longer dared to go out on the street out of fear of being arrested?
Ruth Peri’s journey to Israel began in a small town in Bulgaria. When she was born there in 1988, her family was the only Jewish family in the entire community."We are different,” her mother told her from an early age. Every year, she would visit a Jewish summer camp where they would celebrate the Exodus from Egypt. And on the sabbath, the Jewish day of rest, they would light two candles, in accordance with tradition. Israel was a frequent focus at the summer camp.
Participants from Egypt and Lebanon were critical of Israel’s wars and deplored the construction of settlements. Peri didn’t know much about Israeli policy at the time and countered with things she had heard from other Jews:"Israel has no choice. It has to defend itself.” Peri says that she often became emotional in these debates and felt attacked."I had the feeling that Israel represented me,” she says.
"He was standing in front of the door with a sixpack of beer,” Peri recalls today. They talked the entire night about politics and religion. Mohammed was clever and critical, complaining about the Palestinian leadership just as he did about radical Israelis. And he invited Peri to visit him in Ramallah. The city is in the West Bank and is under Palestinian administration.
Over time, though, the conversations became less frequent. Instead of writing to each other daily, their messages tapered off to just once a month."To be honest, I mostly got in touch when Gaza was bombed,” Peri says today. Rockets would fly over the border into Israel from Gaza, triggering four wars in the region between 2008 and 2021. Peri would then send panicked messages to ask how Rana was doing. But those conflicts came to rapid conclusions and Peri would turn back to her own life.
Rana responded with crying emojis."I hope that you stay safe too. Take care of yourself,” she wrote. The next day, she sent a photo of a smoking crater. The Israeli military had bombed the building next door. It was a feeling that grew stronger with each passing day. When she walked through the streets of East Jerusalem, she thought she could see the fear on the faces of the Palestinians. Some were arrested for their criticism of Israel’s offensive and accused of supporting terror. Anas hardly left the house anymore out of fear that he would be arrested.
Rana’s home had been bombed by then, and the bookstore that her husband had just recently opened was nothing but rubble. Photos show a skeleton of cement, with steel jutting out of it. The foundation of the family’s life in Gaza had been destroyed.
