Like all Our Legacy Work Shop projects, this one with Stüssy is “responsible.” Cofounder Jockum Hallin had upcycling in mind when he launched this experimental niche within the company;had accumulated lots of residual materials during its 10-plus years of existence. “Producing fashion is kind of a beast because it makes you buy too much fabric,” often to meet suppliers’ minimum orders, says Hallin, and “it creates all of this excess material.
This collaboration opens the Work Shop’s internal practice to external influences. “It’s kind of a mixture of Stüssy going into its archive and sharing fabric that was deadstock to reimagine some OL silhouettes, and then vice versa: OL going into its fabric archive and using those to reimagine some Stüssy silhouettes,” says Stüssy’s global brand director Fraser Avey. “[The collection] has this history to it, but it’s also very, very current in its point of view.
The project resonates on a deeply emotional level for Hallin. “When I think about it, I have circled back to Stüssy during many eras of my life,” he says. It was there in the early 1990s when he started skateboarding, and again in the early 2000s when Hallin, a hardcore/punk rocker, wore Stüssy on a record cover. “I loved the connection the brand had to surf, street, and music culture.” At 40, Stüssy feels as fresh to him as it did back in the day.
With global warming an imminent threat, designers today are looking not only to create aesthetics that endure but also garments that last. Hallin’s dream is that one day designers will be able to produce only what’s needed and sell to customers who will buy less and better. Also that “residual material will cease to exist.” At the moment, he adds, “We’re in a state where there’s a lot of stuff laying around everywhere, so I think we need to make the best of it.
