... [+]“A parade was quickly vetoed,” Koehn says. “Someone suggested a tour of outhouses, and there seemed to be a number still in existence. The idea was embraced, but there was a consensus that something needed to be added to the existing units. The upshot was that each unit had to have a theme, a story — more like a tall tale — and a title.”“Something about the tour and its theme apparently struck a chord with the people who attended the event,” Koehn says.
Koehn, who has lived in Elk Falls for 42 years, says it’s easy to list the cons of living in the tiny city. “It has no utility service and is dependent on the rural water system, and there are no gas stations or restaurants,” he says. “A small city budget makes keeping streets in condition a challenge. In need of a Walmart? It’s a 35-mile drive. ““On the plus side, depending on point of view, it takes a certain amount of independence to live here,” Koehn says. “We have an excellent small-town grocery store and pharmacy and an excellent hardware store in Howard, 12 miles up the road.
