Analysis | 'Not a king': Democrats frame vote on Trump’s emergency declaration as a referendum on democracy itself
window.havePowaBoot=true; By Colby Itkowitz Colby Itkowitz Congress, campaigns, health policy, Pennsylvania politics Email Bio Follow February 26 at 2:58 PM Congressional Democrats have framed the vote on President Trump’s national emergency declaration as much more than a referendum on the southern border. They’ve turned it into a statement on the nation’s most fundamental values. “Our founders had a great vision,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference ahead of the vote.
Trump has said he’ll veto the bill, and it’s very unlikely that the measure will receive the two-thirds needed in both chambers to overturn such a move. House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer acknowledged as much when he called it a “vote of principle” that deserves a vote regardless of the outcome. If Trump vetoes the resolution, “it will be another statement that he has authoritarian inclinations,” Hoyer said. This fight stopped being about border security a long time ago.
