Analysis: The Democrats’ shift away from Israel

By Aaron Blake Aaron Blake Senior political reporter, writing for The Fix Email Bio Follow March 26 at 4:10 PM Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar’s recent comments criticizing U.S. support for Israel have caused a rift in the Democratic Party — and coincided with some pressure on Democratic presidential candidates to skip this week’s conference of the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee .

It’s not clear that the change is a reaction to the Omar controversy, however. The Pew Research Center, which has asked a similar question, has also shown a shift away from Israel — but one that started a few years ago. We’ll have to see if other polls bear out this shift, but it’s notable that the unprecedented Democratic split in Quinnipiac’s regular polling of this question matches the shift we’ve seen in Pew polling. And the fact that we see presidential candidates such as Sen. Bernie Sanders actively boycotting AIPAC is also significant and suggests Democrats see some currency in distancing themselves from pro-Israel interests.

Netanyahu described Monday morning's rocket launch that struck a home in central Israel as a 'criminal attack' and vowed to strike back hard. He says he will return to Israel to handle the crisis shortly after meeting with President Donald Trump on Monday. An Israeli rescue service said the rocket from the Gaza Strip struck a house in central Israel, wounding seven people. The sounds of air raid sirens woke up the residents of the residential Sharon area, northeast of Tel Aviv, sending them scurrying to bomb shelters. A strong explosion followed.
