The morning after Andy Murray’s official retirement from professional tennis, townsfolk paid tribute to an inspirational sporting hero.
Murray, 37, hung up his racquet after he and doubles partner Dan Evans were eliminated in the quarter finals at the Olympics in Paris.
At the golden postbox, in Dunblane’s High Street – installed to commemorate his sensational Olympic gold at London 2012 – Andy Murray superfan Janet Ahern, from Dundee, made the trip to his hometown the day after his retirement match. Fiona said: “It’s really emotional. I was thinking about all of those times I stayed up late to watch Andy playing in Australia and all around the world.Karen Featherstone, on trip to the town from Surrey, said: “He has to be considered one of Britain’s best ever.
After waving goodbye to the sport he has dedicated his life to, Andy Murray was asked if there were tears and he said: “Yes, but I knew that moment was coming for the last few months and it felt good. “Physically the last year has been really difficult — the pain and discomfort in my body is not good.Some Murray’s biggest rivals on the court also rushed to pay an emotional tribute to him.
