Our boys were outclassed for long spells by Gareth Southgate’s side who could have won by a bigger margin
Steve Clarke’s in-form side were given a dose of reality by the Auld Enemy who were comfortable winners. Goals from Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane saw off the Scots whose only response was a Harry Maguire OG. Scotland are well on course to qualify for the Euro 2024 Finals in Germany next summer after winning their first five qualifying games.
Elite England We might not like to admit it in Scotland but the Auld Enemy are now among Europe’s elite - and they showed it last night. Even from our Euro 2020 0-0 draw at Wembley two years ago, their level has gone up a notch, whether we like it or not. Which is a real shame, given the talent in our own team. Most of our boys play in the Premier League with or against these English stars. But we looked as if we didn’t have faith in our ability to keep the ball for large chunks of the 90 minutes and it cost us.
But last night, the Scotland skipper will have had a few nightmares about the goal he gifted the Auld Enemy at Hampden. Everyone inside the ground was trying to work out exactly what the Liverpool star was thinking about after 35 minutes when he handed the English their second on a plate. He made up for his mistake in the second half with a brilliant run and cross which led to Harry Maguire’s OG for 2-1.Barnes makes senses If Steve Clarke has a sniff of getting English-born winger Harvey Barnes on board with Scotland he should pursue it. In fact, after coming off second best to the Auld Enemy at Hampden here - with no proper width in our squad, never mind team - maybe the manager should pin the Newcastle ace down until he says yes.
But last night against a top outfit, we needed someone to get us up the pitch and we were lacking a proper winger. Surely, that must appeal to Barnes who has little chance of forcing his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans? If we do get to a tournament, where you can pick a 23-man squad for all eventualities, it’s vital that the manager at least gives himself that option.Hey Jude England have plenty of talented players in their squad who play for some of Europe’s top clubs.
