The question is whether Angel Studios, the streaming platform behind The Chosen, can replicate that success

Spider-Man: No Way Home

swallowing up essentially the entire domestic box office market share, with its $260 million debut accounting for 92% of every ticket sold last weekend, the other skewed side of that is, a decidedly unconventional release that still earned more in its first three weeks in theaters than almost every big-deal adult-skewing drama or awards season contender in play this year.

The film understandably proved to be a one-weekend wonder, dropping 71% in weekend two. It lost 920 theaters this past weekend, earning just $185,000 in 500 theaters and is, save for a Christmas miracle, pretty much finished. Still, when a movie like this earns $14.2 million in 21 days, legs are not the biggest issue. On one hand, that’s incredibly depressing in terms of the feast or famine nature of our pandemic-era theatrical environment.

“Angel Studios helps creators build a direct relationship with their fans and produce meaningful and compelling content for hundreds of millions of people who have been underserved by the entertainment industry,” said Stephen Oskoui, Managing Partner of Gigafund. “We believe that Angel is on track to rewrite the rules of the media business and have a significant impact on culture.”

Angel isn’t the first company that has touted a way to get past conventional challenges that currently exist in the theatrical industry. Steven Soderbergh’s last two theatrical films,, were supposed to rewrite the rules of theatrical distribution. While both good movies, they went mostly unseen by paying audiences and Soderbergh turned his attention to streaming platforms.
