Ward homered in back-to-back games in Chicago, convincing Manager Phil Nevin that he’s getting back to being the kind of player the Angels hoped after his breakout season in 2022.
HOUSTON — Phil Nevin has seen enough from Taylor Ward this week to believe that he’s getting back to where the Angels hoped.
The proof of Nevin’s opinion was in the lineup, with Ward starting in left field ahead of Mickey Moniak even though the Angels were facing a right-hander.Moniak took over as the primary left fielder against righties, with Ward relegated to playing against leftiesMoniak didn’t start for a three-day span – two games against lefties around an off day – and when he got back into the lineup he had cooled off, with three hits in 18 at-bats.
Ward had an .833 OPS with 23 homers last season, but he’d been under .700 for most of this season. His recent improvement lifted his OPS to .662.“It’s a challenge because Mickey is swinging it great too,” Nevin said. “At the start of the season, we didn’t know if there would be that many at-bats for him, but he’s earned the right to have them and keep him fresh. We’ll try to do the best we can.”Nevin moved Brandon Drury up to the cleanup spot and Hunter Renfroe down to the No. 6 spot.
