Algerians continue protests despite President Bouteflika's offer to shorten new term in power

Students holding Algeria's flag protest against Abdelaziz Bouteflika's plan to extend his 20-year rule by seeking a fifth term in April elections, at a university in Algiers, Algeria, March 3, 2019.

Students determined to pursue Algeria's biggest anti-government protests in years boycotted classes on Monday to denounce Bouteflika's offer not to serve a full term if re-elected. Demonstrators set a social security office on fire in the working class neighbourhood of Belouizdad, prompting clashes with police.Demonstrations were also held in other cities against another term for Bouteflika, who has barely been seen in public since a 2013 stroke and is facing protests over his leadership of Africa's largest country.

But protesters don't want Bouteflika to run at all in the April 18 vote and described the offer as a ploy to remain in power.
