The 60s rockers premiered their new single today on a livestream alongside a surprise announcement of their upcoming album, Hackney Diamonds. Their first new music in 18 years didn't disappoint
It started with an advert in the paper – and the editor didn’t even realise.today ostensibly for a glazing company called Hackney Diamonds – except it was littered with references to Stones songs and had their signature tongue logo over the “i”. In fact, the advert was for a special launch event in the borough announcing the Stones’ new album of that name – due to be released on 20 October – and premiering their single, “Angry”.
And it was worth all the bother. “Angry” is rollicking, rip-roaring rock ‘n’ roll, a song about a clash of lovers that is only ever seen in sunglasses and has smoked 20 a day since it was 14, recalling the light-hearted, subversive nonchalance of classics like “ Satisfaction” and “Gimme Shelter” . Like its marketing strategy, it is old-school, authentic and doesn’t take itself seriously.
Fans may well already be mildly angry – because it actually started, of course, over the weekend, when the Stones teased fans with a link to a malfunctioning website called dontgetangrywithme.com, building hype for their first new music in 18 years. This, along with the livestreamed press conference hosted by Jimmy Fallon, seemed like thoroughly modern ways to re-enter the scene , and yet the music itself remains classic and unruffled by trends, ageing or the loss of a band member .
For the Stones, it’s all in the tempo: deceptively slow, full of swagger, and not needing to show off. Jagger is known, of course, for his high-energy live performances – but while “Angry” lends itself, with its catchy refrain, to plenty of mic-stand moves, it’s proof that the energy of the Stones doesn’t come from being complicated. There’s always room for the riffs to breathe, building only at the end to driving guitars and a coda with backing vocals.
In the interview with Fallon, who was a little nervous and extremely American, Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood exuded a similar aura of cool, being completely comfortable in themselves. There was no hint here of a cynical comeback – save for a few years in the 80s when the Jagger-Richards relationship was touch-and-go, they have been touring near-constantly since they formed – only a genuine desire to make more music.
