Leeds United's chief executive, speaking in an exclusive interview with The Square Ball, admits the exits of both Luis Sinisterra and Tyler Adams left a sour taste
Leeds United CEO Angus Kinnear has opened up on the series of events that led to the club reluctantly parting ways with Luis Sinisterra and Tyler Adams this summer. The Whites had hoped to keep hold both men in order to bolster their hopes of winning promotion from the Championship and back to the Premier League.
“A number of players were made offers which would have closed the financial gap for them between where they were and where they are now and they still decided they just wanted to be in the Premier League,” he told The Square Ball in an in-depth interview.
“So I respect all players' desire to play at the highest level, they have short careers and they should have the opportunity should they want to, to play at the highest level. I think there are ways that you can handle your desire to play at the highest level and from a personal perspective I don't think either of those two players handle it particularly well.
Adams’ desire to leave Elland Road came to light when Chelsea triggered his release clause at the beginning of August. Ultimately that deal fell through, but a short while later he was allowed to make the move to the Vitality Stadium, where he will be expected to make his debut in the coming weeks as he edges back to full fitness.
“[He wasn’t] sold purely because we couldn't get to the value that we believed he's worth and I think for his perspective that was simply because he just hasn't played enough games,” Kinnear admitted. “I think he's a player that is worth more than we paid for him and I think ultimately he'll be a player that we'll sell above his book value or above the amount we paid for him in time if the decision is to sell him.
