Ansel Elgort said he and Violetta are clear that they want to feel open to fall in love with other people. Still, he said the pair are sexually exclusive, adding that the two things don't have to go hand in hand. Ansel opened up about his interest in exploring love with other people when asked what he envisions for himself in the next five years.
"I’d like to have done a few plays and performed my music. I’d also like to find a lot more love,” he. "It doesn’t need to be sexual. I could be done sexually with my girlfriend. I think we’ve been pretty clear that I want to feel free to fall in love with people and that [option] should be open, but sexually it can be closed off."
Ansel is totally right that all kinds of different love exist. He went on to use his friendship with men as an example of how he thinks love can exist without sex. "I'm in love with a bunch of my male friends who I’m not interested in having sex with, so why can’t I put the desire to have sex with women aside and let myself have love with women?" he said. “I love, and we never had anything sexual, and that was great. There will probably be some sort of chemical thing at some point that you can’t help, but you just have to be disciplined.”
It's not totally clear whether Ansel is seeking more romantic love, or if he's in search of more intimate friends who can provide the platonic love that a deep friendship holds. Either way, it's no one's place to judge as long as he and Violetta are both on board with this set up. Ultimately, as long as everyone in whatever relationship he enters into feels respected and fulfilled, there's really no downside to having more love in the world.
