A monumental artist deserves a monumental documentary, and that is what Anselm Kiefer receives in Wim Wenders’ new film, titled simplyWenders shot it in 3D and 6K resolution, documenting the German-born painter and sculptor who makes work on a truly grand scale. We have your first look at the documentary, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, in the trailer above.
The documentary from Sideshow and Janus Films will be released in select U.S. theaters on December 8.“presents a cinematic experience of the artist’s work which explores human existence and the cyclical nature of history, inspired by literature, poetry, philosophy, science, mythology and religion,” according to a synopsis of the film.
When we spoke with Wenders in Cannes, he said of Kiefer, “There’s a man who is not afraid to paint anything. He can paint the universe and he can paint mathematic formula and he can paint history and he can paint myths, biology, alchemy. He’s not afraid of any of human knowledge to go into painting or sculpture. He can use the entire knowledge of mankind, mythical and scientific, in order to produce a painting that will reveal some of that.
Sideshow and Janus Films acquired U.S. rights to the documentary at the end of June. In a statement announcing the deal, the companies said, “When we sawat Cannes, we were transported by this visionary portrait of a once in a generation artist from a once in a generation filmmaker. We are so happy to continue our relationship with Wim Wenders and to bring his exquisite and personal film to theaters around the country.
