A new feature is coming to Apple Music this month, for all those parties where you can’t resist jumping up to sing.
Anyway, back to Apple Music Sing, which will arrive at the same time, so in good time for you to make the most of it at parties this holiday season. Here’s how you do it: when you launch Apple Music and find the track you want to sing along to, look out for the image of the microphone and three stars in a volume slider. Swipe up and down this to add or subtract how much of the original vocalist you want to hear. Then start singing.
What’s interesting is that this changes your experience to singing along to a regular track. Suddenly, you may find you’re slightly slipping out of sync—that original vocal helps you keep time better, I found. If there’s a downside, it’s that it’s not quite intuitive when it comes to adjusting the original vocals on the fly. If you keep your thumb on the volume slider, it will stay in view but if you don’t, it’ll disappear. How do you call it back to adjust things? Well, the only way I found was to swipe the lyrics offscreen and swipe them back again, which restores the microphone icon.
Apple Music Sing lets you sing along with tracks while turning down the volume on the original artist. That artist won’t disappear altogether, which is why it’s not being called karaoke: it’s not new instrumental versions of tracks with no vocals, it’s the original music but with the artist turned down so you can shine.
