“There’s a big difference between can you theoretically recycle it in a laboratory versus does it get recycled in real life,” one expert said.

Several experts interviewed by The Washington Post said the recycling rate of these tubes is likely low. There appears to be few communities in the United States that currently accept any toothpaste tubes for recycling, Bailey said. And just because tubes are accepted, doesn’t guarantee that they’re recycled.
“We’re processing 400 tons a day of material,” she said. “We’re definitely not able to sort by brand. We have to change packaging by packaging category, not by brand.”Colgate-Palmolive said it has shared its tube technology with other companies in hopes that it becomes more widely adopted.Experts say these efforts should be guided by regulations that set clear standards around what can and can’t be considered recyclable.
