Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Henry Cavill's Argylle is quickly becoming the next great box office disappointment. The spy movie often verges into comedy and has a star-studded cast that includes Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockwell, and Samuel L. Jackson. While that cast might ordinarily lead to massive box office returns, the movie opened to a mere $6.
According to a report by Deadline, Argylle's poor returns are likely to continue. With a $6.6 million projected take for the weekend, the movie has suffered a massive 62 percent drop from last weekend. It's Cavill's biggest second-week drop since 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which suffered an 81 percent drop, according to Box Office Mojo.
Why Is Argylle Failing At The Box Office? It is shocking anytime a movie fails at the box office to the extent that Cavill's latest blockbuster did. Many of Argylle's early reviews were somewhat negative, which decreased some of the draw when it was first released. Audiences were somewhat more forgiving, but still not wholly positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics granted the movie a 32 percent Tomatometer score.
Related There's Now A Lot More Pressure On Henry Cavill's Next Movie After Rotten Tomatoes & Box Office Disaster Henry Cavill's upcoming action comedy is under more pressure to perform well after the critical and commercial failure of his most recent spy comedy. Another major problem was the release date. January and February tend to be slow months for movies, and this movie released the week before the Super Bowl.
The lack of an established brand also decreased Argylle's chances of success. There was no well-known and well-regarded product to adapt, nor was it part of an existing universe of movies. Many movies have been struggling at the box office recently, even with a well-known brand, as Lightyear, The Marvels, and Fast X exemplified. Argylle was simply a movie without an existing audience, which risked failure from the beginning. Cavill's presence just wasn't enough to save it.
